Ms.Daisy Picks Flix

One of my very favorite things to do is watch movies. I'm pretty discriminating and try not to waste my time watching movies that don't come highly recommended. I count on family to tell me their favorites and Christianity Today's Movie Reviews and any and all reviews I come across. One Christmas I was given a gift certificate to Netflix and, boy, was I hooked. What could be better. I pick movies from their lists of thousands, they send them to my house and I can return them whenever. Very cool. Anyway, all this to say I let my family and friends know my "Favs and Blahs" by way of my notes to them via the Netflix program. Sooooooo, I'm going to let YOU in on some of my favs and/or some movies that just didn't do it for me! I use what is known in the TV biz (according to my daughter) as "choppy copy." I used plus signs on a scale of one to five to show my own personal ratings of them. Here are some examples:

The Spiderwick Chronicles PG +++
"Definitely not a kids movie. Some of the creatures were cute but most were creepy and scary. Children were always running into them or running from them."

A Saturday Funny Just For You

I have been indulging myself by hanging out on the computer today in my jammies catching up on some email that I have let pile up...I have been laughing and laughing because some of them are so cute and some are downright funny! This one has been around for awhile and I wanted to pass along some cheer to all who visit my blog and need a smile today!

Subject: OOOPS!

~A young executive was leaving the office late one evening when he found the CEO standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand.

~"Listen," said the CEO, "this is a very sensitive and important document and my secretary has gone for the night. Can you make this thing work?"

~"Certainly," said the young executive. He turned the machine on, inserted the paper and pressed the start button.

~"Excellent, excellent!" said the CEO as his paper disappeared inside the machine.

"I just need one copy."

"Let's Put on a Show!" with Mickey Rooney

On Monday, a friend called and asked if I wanted to see a show on Tuesday afternoon with her. It's Mickey Rooney she said. "Mickey Rooney? Isn't he about 100 now?" She laughed and said, "Hey, the tickets are free! It might be pretty good!"
So, on Tuesday afternoon we trekked on over to see Mickey Rooney (and his wife, Jan) "put on a show" for us and about 500 other seniors. He was celebrating his 85th year in show business! He had crawled out onto the stage, where his father was performing in a vaudville act, when he was a baby and he has been "onstage" ever since. We had wonderful seats, in the center section and about 9 rows from the stage. I have to say that at 85, Mickey was still moving (barely, poor soul, BUT still moving!). There were three giant screens that showed a montage of his many Andy Hardy movies with Judy Garland and movies with other stars throughout his life.

He performed the first act by himself with just his trio consisting of piano, bass and drums for musical support and to bounce jokes off. His monologue was pretty much read from the teleprompter but he was funny even when he joked a little bit about his 7 previous marriages! He and Jan have been married for 35 years. He talked about meeting "the love of my life" - she was 26 years old and was just establishing her singing career when they met.

For the second act, Mickey retired backstage and Jan came on and did some wonderful bluesy kinds of songs and then a tribute to Patsy Cline (one of my favorite CW singers). For the last part of the show, Mickey returned to the stage and Mickey and Jan did some quick repartee and some songs like "You say tomato and I say tomawto" which was really quite cute. He even tried a little soft shoe (steady there!)and Jan asked him to play one of his original tunes on the piano, which he did. All in all a good show. While I was sitting there watching, I couldn't help but compare Mickey Rooney and my Dad. They are about the same age. Dad was born in 1920 and Mickey in 1922. My Dad is in a nursing home with Alzheimer's and here is Mickey - STILL PERFORMING! I had to wonder - what's the secret?

A Fourth with a "Capitol " C

Just as some of you, I came back from celebrating a July Fourth weekend away. I went to visit my daughter, son in law and grand kids and while there along with friends of my daughter's family, we went to see the fireworks - - the Capitol Fourth fireworks. Well, we weren't actually on the Mall watching the fireworks, but I did get to see them live! As we didn't want to be in the crush of the Mall crowd, we were settled in a small clearing with a good view of the Washington Monument and since the fireworks were being set off at one end of the reflecting pool on the Mall we had a great vantage point.

We brought folding chairs, snacks, a blanket for the kids to sit on and umbrellas...yes, umbrellas. While we waited for dusk and the fireworks to start we were quite sure that we had discovered the perfect spot to view the display. We were in for a rude awakening though, because just as the pyrotechnics were starting so did the pitter pat of the raindrops! Up went the umbrellas and in came more people than we thought could possibly squeeze into the small, grassy space with THEIR umbrellas and,of course,stood right in front of us! So, as the bright colors exploded high in the air, we craned our necks and tried to stay dry as we cheered and oohed and aahed with every brilliant flash! It was a lot of fun and I wouldn't have missed it for anything and not even the mosquitoes could dampen (pun intended) our enthusiasm!
