PRESIDENTS' DAY

Today is Abraham Lincoln's birthday. We won't celebrate it today, though, we will lump it together with George Washington's birthday (Feb. 22nd) and we will make a "Monday Holiday" called Presidents' Day on Monday, February 16th.

There are many sales going on right now to "celebrate" these two famous men's birthdays. Although, I'm not sure how many people are shopping right now with all the doom and gloom around about our economy. I was in a department store yesterday picking up a birthday present for a relative and I was talking to some of the salesmen I know. They were quite down in the dumps as there were no customers and there hadn't been any customers in their department (appliances) for awhile. They said they had never seen it as bad as right now. I'm not in the market for any appliances just now (but my refrigerator is making funny noises) so who knows? I did remind them that we have lived through worse days than these in the retail business and to keep in mind that washers, dryers and refrigerators do wear out and need to be replaced. Nothing makes an appliance salesman smile more than the thought that appliances don't last 20-25 years like they used to! Oh well, at least I made them smile!

I shudder to think, though, what Abraham Lincoln and George Washington would say if they could see how cavalierly we treat their memories.

I bet if we took a poll... most people wouldn't even know who's birthdays we are celebrating! And it makes me wonder... what should we do to commemorate it?

I think it's sad how every holiday has been turned into a shopping spree.

Dropped by to say a very Happy Valentine! I love your little Victorian Valentine in your sidebar! Yes, the current climate is a challenge to us to enjoy the simple pleasures. I feel strongly we should enjoy our own homes and invite friends around for coffee or meals at home instead of meeting in the Mall and buying expensive cappachino's. My eyes are really opened to the beauty of my own home in a new way when I share it with a friend. Wish I could have you around! But through techno-wonder we can visit! Lots of love Eleanor

Jean, I agree with you--we give so little respect to our past presidents. Remember when we used to celebrate both days separately? Then, we started adding MORE days to celebrate, so it just made it "easier" to combine Washington's and Lincoln's. Gads, we're in sad shape with our decisions sometimes.

Hope you are enjoying your Valentine's Day and hope your frig keeps on ticking for a while longer! :) Dana

Hi there again, Miss Daisy! I left a comment yesterday too. But maybe you have not moderated it yet. Hope the old technology is not letting us down. Thank you so much for the Award. I have a bit behind in reading my own Inbox of comments. I am going to post all my Awards this week. Hope you had a lovely Valentine's Day. I am not so mad about Valentine's Day as it seems so commercially induced. But I have read so many lovely blogs 'spreading the love' that I can see it can have a lot of depth to it!

I liked it better when we had separate holidays for the two presidents. They were both such special presidents but it's probably better to honor them all.

Hi Jean,
I tried to comment earlier but for some reason it didn't seem to go through. I'll try again.
I liked it better when there was a Washington and Lincoln Birthday. It's probably better to honor all of the presidents. The way so many people feel about the current president it wouldn't surprise me if they don't designate a President Obama Day. Probably while he is still the President.
