Recently I purchased a CD called Best of Bluegrass and on it are some wonderful old spirituals such as, I'll Fly Away, When the Roll is Called up Yonder, Lily of the Valley, Standing on the Promises and one I had never heard before called, The Great Speckled Bird by Mac Wiseman, lyrics by Lucinda Williams. I was immediately taken by the melody and words to this song.
1.What a beautiful thought I am thinking
Concerning a great speckled bird
Remember her name is recorded
On the pages of God's Holy Word.
2. All the other birds are flocking 'round her
And she is despised by the squad
But the great speckled bird in the Bible
Is one with the great church of God.
3. All the other churches are against her
They envy her glory and fame
They hate her because she is chosen
And has not denied Jesus' Name.
4. Desiring to lower her standard
They watch every move that she makes
They long to find fault with her teachings
But really they find no mistakes.
5. She is spreading her wings for a journey
She's going to leave by and by
When the trumpet shall sound in the morning
She'll rise and go up in the sky.
6. In the presence of all her despisers
With a song never uttered before
She will rise and be gone in a moment
Till the great tribulation is o'er.
7. I am glad I have learned of her meekness
I am proud that my name is on her book
For I want to be one never fearing
The face of my Savior to look.
8. When He cometh descending from heaven
On the cloud that He writes in His Word
I'll be joyfully carried to meet Him
On the wings of that great speckled bird.
I have become a big fan of bluegrass music ever since becoming a member of my present church ten years ago because of a family of member musicians who sing and play bluegrass gospel. The songs and words are a great source of inspiration to me.
1.Shout with joy to the Lord, O earth!
2. Worship the Lord with gladness.
Come before him, singing with joy.
Psalm 100: 1-2
-NIV

Wow. I haven't heard or thought about that song, The Great Speckled Bird, since I was a kid. I get a song like that on my mind and I can't get it off. I just keep singing or humming it over and over. For some reason, I have never been a fan of Bluegrass. I'm not sure why, because I like just about every kind of music. I do like your post though. Thanks for writing.
I've never heard that song before either. Thank you for sharing. Happy Spiritual Sunday.
I have not been around for a while because I have to fill in a lengthy application form at work and it is so time consuming. The experience reminds me so much of your attempt to book those air tickets! I have now read all the posting I have missed. I also love When the roll is called up yonder! it is one of my ambitions to visit Amish country and see their wonderful quilts! Hope Bebe is doing well!
Thanks for dropping by. I appreciate your words of congratulations to the Cardinals. Football is not the number one thing in my life, but I do enjoy watching it.
Thank you, Ms. Daisy for the prayers for my Stepson. He made it safely and now it is really hitting Dear Hubs that his son is so far away. He keeps muttering outloud "I can't believe my son is overseas!"
Maybe we'll be taking a trip there sooner than I thought! :-0
Thank you, Ms. Daisy for visiting my blog. You are right. Maybe a voice will be heard. Or just a peep. Either way, something is happening!
