SPIRITUAL SUNDAY

AN OLD CHURCH
The walls which now
Are crumbling lime
Could not withstand
The urge of time.

The wood has rotted
On the doors;
Rain has ravished
Roof and floors...

And yet because
Men worshipped here,
Something holy
And austere

Lingers on
And fills the air,
Like echoes
Of a quiet prayer.

This is a beautiful poem. The image that you left of what lingers in the church will go with me as I leave for worship. Thanks for sharing!

I don't know if you know Marty Kittrell, but he has some wonderful photographs on his blog that speak to this poem! I have a link on my sidebar if you want to follow over and take a look.

Thanks for sharing...

What a lovely post. I love old churches. There is something beautiful and serene about them, no matter their condition.

Touching. I know a lot about old church buildings. I have seen a lot of them. Wonderful memories.

love me some old churches...
one evening last summer we were blessed to hear a youth choir sing a concert in the old chapel at Williamsburg. i so enjoyed sitting in those old pews, seeing the candlelight flicker while hearing those sweet, sweet voices lifting praise! it was an hour I will always cherish...feeling like it was a time from long ago and imagining the prayers of the 'new world' community there in that place.

thanks for reminding me of that evening!

Lovely poem...very visual. I like seeing "things" as I read them.
Churches have certainly changed through the years haven't they?

I love to wander around the ruins of a church when I am overseas. But it is sad - to think the active use is over. Here there is little chance of a ruined church - I am pleased to report church attendance is strong and lots of young people. so pleased your loved ones came for a visit.
